Staying on Track During the Holidays

We’ve come to the start of another new week, and with it another chance to begin building some effective healthy habits.

We are quickly approaching Thanksgiving, and for those who have been working to change their diets and/or lose weight, holiday gatherings can understandably sometimes feel more stressful than joyful. The good news is that one day can’t undo all of your hard work! Let’s go over some strategies, though, that can keep you feeling like you’re still on track towards your goals.

You can absolutely stay on track with your health goals during holiday parties — it’ll just take a little planning! Try this:

Offer to bring a dish.

If you’re going to a potluck, bring something nutritious that aligns with your goals. You’ll be guaranteed to have at least one available healthy option, and you’ll be helping out other guests that may be looking for the same thing.

Don’t starve beforehand!

It may seem logical to try to eliminate any calories consumed before the party or event to “make up for” the fact that you’ll be eating more during it, but that is NOT the best strategy. This will generally lead to overeating out of excessive hunger. The best strategy would be to eat light, nourishing, nutrient-dense meals and snacks earlier in the day.

Ideally, look for a lean protein and high-fiber carb to keep you feeling satiated. These would work well, for example:

  • Eggs with whole grain toast and fruit

  • Protein-rich smoothie with nuts and fruit

  • Greek yogurt/cottage cheese with nuts and fruit

  • Lox on whole-grain toast and fruit

  • Salad with turkey, grilled chicken, lentils, eggs, or beans

Set a drink limit ahead of time.

This can help you avoid excessive calories from alcoholic beverages and stay more in control of your choices.

Start out with water or non-alcoholic drinks and avoid drinking on an empty stomach, which may impair your decision-making much quicker.

Did you know?

Among the lightest alcoholic beverages you can drink are:

  • 5 oz. glass white wine (121 calories)

  • 1.5 oz rum (97 calories)

  • 12 oz. light beer (110 calories)

And finally…Enjoy the Company!

Slow down and enjoy the company of those around you. Enjoy the atmosphere, the conversation, and being with friends and family. The holidays are about the people you’re visiting and the memories you’re making.

Bonus reminder:

Be kind to yourself. As I mentioned at the top, one day won’t undo your progress!
